Wander into a Wilderness Safari with 'Wunderkammer'

I spy with my little eye a Zebra, a Monkey and a Polar Bear. Artist Rod McRae’s exhibition ‘Wunderkammer’ features a series of preserved (taxidermied) exotic animals scattered throughout the 1930’s art deco of the Everglades Historic House & Gardens. The art pieces are on display now and will be at the Everglades until August 27th, 2017.

Wunderkammer, meaning ‘closet of secrets’ in German sets out to challenge our views on environmental change using an array of exotic taxidermied animals. The animals in the display shed a light on the global issues of trophy hunting, displacement, poisoning that each animal faces.

Everglades manager Scott Pollock says: “While this exhibition is provocative and even confronting, our environment surrounding us here in the Greater Blue Mountains World Heritage Area with its vast wilderness of rare, unknown and thought-to-be-extinct plant and animal species demands that we give it consideration.’’

Every animal in the secret stash has been ethically-sourced and no animals were harmed to make the artwork. Wunderkammer has been on the regional art gallery circuit since 2013.

There are 15 exotic animals that exist as portals, asking what was, what is and what could be?

When: This provocative exhibition is on display until August 27th, 2017.

Location: Everglades Historic House & Gardens - 37 Everglades Ave, Leura.

Exhibition hours: 11am to 3pm daily.

Regular Everglades opening hours: 10am to 4pm daily during Autumn and Winter and 10am to 5pm (daylight savings).

Entry: $13 adults, $8 concessions, $4 children, National Trust members free.
