'The Sleep of Reason' & 'Awakening of Love'

From Jan 30 – 4 Feb, Gallery One88 will be showing,‘The Sleep of Reason' & 'Awakening of Love’ – an eye-grabbing new exhibit that aims to unveil the masked world of mental illness by artist Alyssa Black.

Artist Statement (Alyssa Black)

My body of work The Sleep Of Reason which constitutes the majority of my proposed show tackles the theme of mental illness from the subjective perspective of a long-time sufferer of Obsessive Compulsive Disorder, Body Dysmorphic Disorder and Anorexia Nervosa, topics rarely explored in art before and little discussed anywhere outside psychiatric circles. I tell my story through detailed, richly coloured oil paintings that combine realism with delusion and which utilise my training as an artist and art-historian to draw on historical visual-cultural tropes that help in elaborating my narratives. This work, and indeed my entire practice, is based on the belief that there are many things about our experiences that cannot be said in words, but can be imaged, and that giving voices to the horror of mental illness from sufferers’ perspectives will aid in developing a greater empathy for patients.

The second body of work for my proposed show, The Awakening of Love, reflects the hope I have recently discovered for my future through love and its ability to create room for some freedom from the captivity of mental illness and contrast the dark landscapes of my mind with the broad, free landscapes of the Blue Mountains.

The Sleep of Reason & The Awakening of Love are two bodies of work not to be missed, promising to reveal & unravel some of the illusive layers of the human psyche.
